Many of us love our pets more than our own family. It can be a worry knowing that someone else out there might love them a little too much and want to welcome them into their lives. Thankfully, there are many ways you can ensure your pet doesn’t become a target for thieves.
Keep them at home
Pet doors might seem like a quick solution to let your pets in and out of the house as they please, but they could mean we sometimes have no idea where they are. If you want to make sure that your pets stay safely away from thieves, then be sure to keep watch over them when they head out into the yard – especially if your home is close to the street.
Treat them like children
Would you ever leave a child unattended in a public place? Probably not. The same goes for your pet. You never know who could be watching your pet at any time, and taking your eye off them – even for a moment – could have disastrous consequences. The same goes for leaving your pet tied to a street light while you go to the store or leaving them in the car for a few moments. It’s best to keep them by your side.
Anyone who comes into your pets life needs to be thoroughly checked to make sure they are the best person for you and your pet. This means anyone from walkers to pet sitters and just about everyone in between. Vets can be great people to ask for recommendations as they often know the most reputable in the area. Plus, there are many websites aimed at finding tried and tested people to help care for our pets.
Get them registered
Many countries now insist that all pets must be microchipped. Not only will you be sticking to the law, but this could also help to keep your pet safe just in case they get out of your sight. Plus, keeping receipts from the vet, groomers, or proof of purchase can help to prove that you are the pet’s owner and no one else – just in case someone tries to tamper with your information.
Avoid social media
We hate to break it to social media lovers, but it might be time to stop adding albums worth of photos to your profile if you want to keep your pet safe from any prying eyes. Some breeds can fetch big bucks – and some people will do anything to get their hands on some extra cash. However, it’s important to have up to date photos of your pet on your phone so that you can show them to officials if your pet goes missing.
Many of us don’t want to think of our pet becoming a target for thieves, but it’s something we have to be careful about with our four-legged friends by our side. Thankfully, keeping them safe doesn’t have to be as tough as it sounds.
