The holidays can be many of our favorite time of the year. Then again, they can also be challenging for various reasons. From the stress and anxiety they can sometimes cause to events that have happened around the big day and everything in between, learning how to mentally cope with the holiday season could be what many of us need.

Set boundaries with loved ones

It can be easy to feel pressured into spending all day with our loved ones because it’s what they want us to do. That doesn’t mean we have to if we know we won’t be able to mentally cope with the holiday season. Instead, be sure to clearly outline your boundaries ahead of time. If everyone knows you might need some time to yourself, it’s their issue if they struggle when you need to go for a walk or to sit in another room. Whatever the case, be sure everyone is on the same page ahead of time, even if that means sending a text or having a quiet word with someone before the holidays.

Many of us have been raised to spend the holidays with our families, regardless of what we want to do with our day. While it can be a great time to build memories with loved ones, it doesn’t mean we have to spend the day with people who make us feel uncomfortable. There’s a good chance many of us know who we don’t want to see during the holidays, but what about those who we do want to spend the day with? This is just as important, even if it means spending time with friends instead of family.

Process your emotions and value your feelings

Several people have tried to learn how to mentally cope with all kinds of emotions throughout the years. That doesn’t mean we have to push them to one side for the holidays. Sure, it might not be the thing we want to do with our holidays, but it’s important that we allow ourselves time to process our emotions and value our feelings. Oftentimes, we need a moment to think about what we’re feeling, understand why we’re feeling it, and allow ourselves the time to process the emotions.

Learning that it’s okay to choose ourselves is something that’s tough to do but can change our lives. Want to protect your mental health and know that won’t be possible if you’re around other people? There is no harm in spending some time by yourself doing the things you want to do with the day. It could be catching up on your favorite TV show, eating a delicious meal, or enjoying your hobby away from the chaos of the rest of the world. Either way, we sometimes need to be our own carers.

Learning how to mentally cope with the holiday season can often feel overwhelming, but that doesn’t mean we have to jeopardize our mental well-being for the festive season.
