There’s nothing we love more than the sun shining down on us and the summer heat hitting our shoulders and defrosting us after the winter months. The summer is a great time to head to the beach, laze out in your yard, or go for a dip in the pool – but do you often feel like your exercise routine slacks during this time? It can be hard to build up the motivation to go running when the weather is so warm, but that doesn’t mean that you have to stop altogether.
If you’re a keen runner, you’ll already know the importance of staying hydrated. However, this is even more important if you’re planning on running in the summer heat. While it can be easy to assume that you should drink water a few hours before your run, this isn’t actually the case. Consuming a huge amount of water before heading out into the sun can make you need to use the restroom more than usual, so it’s better to just maintain hydration a few days before your run – or just throughout the summer months as a whole. This is good practice anyway, even if you don’t go running.
Choose the right attire
Most people know that you can’t exercise in jeans and a shirt, and that choosing the right exercising attire is incredibly important. This is even more important when the temperature starts to heat up, as you need to ensure that your body doesn’t overheat and cause you to experience health problems. If you’re looking to go running in the blazing summer heat, make sure that you wear clothing made from breathable and moisture-wicking fabric. You are more likely to sweat in the heat, and the last thing you want is to deal with some serious chafing in the midst of your run.
Prepare for the heat
If you live in an air-conditioned home, heading straight out into the sun can give your body a shock it just wasn’t expecting. This can make you fatigue quicker, it can make you struggle more, and it can actually make you feel rather ill. Because of this, it’s important to ensure that you prepare your body for the heat. You can do this by sitting in the sun for a little while before heading out for your run, or you could even run a hot bath to acclimate your body. By doing this, your body should be able to cope with the temperature much better.
Manage your expectations
There are many runners in the world who love to push themselves as hard as they can to beat their own personal bests. While this is commendable most of the time, it can be dangerous during the summer months. When the weather heats up, it’s important to manage and reassess your expectations. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t hit your PB, because it’s tough out there. Just use this time to enjoy running again.
