Stress and anxiety often plague many of our lives, even when we least expect it. Working from home, listening to the news, and trying to deal with the pressures of life can leave many of us feeling a little wound up. Thankfully, these are the best ways to relieve tension in your neck and shoulders.
Child’s pose is one of the most simple yoga poses and can do wonders when we need a little relief in our neck and shoulders. Get onto all fours with your hands flat on the floor. Once you’re comfortable, lean your behind back toward your heels and stretch your hands out in front of you. You should start to feel a stretch down both of your shoulders and even into your spine. Hold this for around 90 seconds and repeat as many times as you need throughout the day.
Thread the needle
Start this pose on your hands and knees. Then, take your right arm and slide it underneath your left side, just like you’re threading a needle. Your right shoulder should be on the ground, and your middle will twist, meaning your left shoulder starts to point toward the ceiling. If you feel comfortable, then you can raise your left hand to the sky as you hold the pose for 30 seconds.
Performing the cat-cow pose can do more than relieve tension in your neck and shoulders; it can also stretch your back and stomach. Get onto all fours with your knees under your hips and hands under your shoulders. As you inhale, lift your head to the sky and pull your middle to the floor. Then, as you exhale, pull your core toward your spin and look down at the floor. Pause for a few seconds between each pose to get the full effects.
Although it’s called the neck release, this stretch is a great way to relieve tension in your neck and shoulders. Start by standing tall with your shoulders back and chest forward. Gently lower your head by bringing your chin to the chest before rolling your head to one side. Keep this position for up to 30 seconds before gently bringing your head back to the center and repeating on the other side. Repeat up to five times on each side to get the most of this stretch.
One of the best ways to relieve tension in your neck and shoulders is a gentle neck stretch. Stand tall and gently tilt your head to the right. Then, use your right hand to gently pull your head over to your shoulder, being careful not to stretch your neck too far. Hold this pose for around 30 seconds before releasing your neck and repeating the stretch on the other side.
Learning the best ways to relieve tension in your neck and shoulders can have amazing repercussions in the long run. As well as feeling more comfortable throughout the day, you could also prevent health complications further down the line.
