Running is an excellent way to keep on top of your fitness, especially if you do it on natural terrain. Unfortunately, running outside also means braving the elements, which isn’t particularly fun in winter. You don’t need to worry about the cold, wet weather standing in the way of your running at this time of year, though. There’s plenty you can do to ensure that running remains enjoyable in the winter months.
Find a buddy
There’s no better way to ensure you meet your exercise goals than to have someone holding you accountable. If someone is expecting you to go running with them every other day, you’ll find it harder to back out. Of course, that’s not the only reason to do it. By running with a friend, you also have someone there to make the experience more fun. If you’re exercising with someone you have great chemistry with, every run will be an unforgettable one.
Have post-run motivation
Plenty of people run because they have a long-term health and fitness goal in mind. The only problem with this is that you don’t see the benefits immediately after exercise. That means this isn’t always that effective if you need motivation in the winter. That’s why it’s worth finding something that you can enjoy after the run as a reward for your efforts. This might be a certain snack or a special purchase – anything that makes the struggle of exercise worthwhile. Just make sure you only allow yourself this treat if you actually go out running.
Wear the right clothes
If you want to have fun when running, you need to wear the right clothes. Wearing the wrong stuff will only make you uncomfortable, which will instantly prevent you from enjoying yourself. What should you wear, though? It’s generally a good rule to dress as though it’s not winter outside. After all, you’re going to warm up once you get going, and the last thing you need is to sweat too much. Furthermore, opt for shoes and socks that will keep your feet warm and water out. That way, if you run through puddles, your feet won’t suffer for it.
Run multiple times a day
On a terrible winter day, the thought of running outside for an hour or so might be too horrific to think about. In those instances, it may be worth breaking your run into multiple bursts. For example, instead of doing five miles in the middle of the day, you might want to do 2.5 miles in the morning and 2.5 miles in the afternoon/evening. This won’t work for everyone, but it will save you from being outdoors too long at any given time. Plus, if the weather improves through the day, your later run should be nicer than the earlier one.
Unless you’re super passionate about running, finding the motivation to do it in the winter can be tricky. However, all of these tactics should help to make the experience more enjoyable, even if the outdoors doesn’t look inviting in the slightest.
