It’s long been known that exercise is conducive to a healthy lifestyle, but the concept of exercise isn’t quite as simple as it once was. There are all kinds of exercises and workouts out there, and there are all kinds of experts who believe that one is better than the other. This can leave many people confused, unable to determine what’s best for them and what they should be avoiding for their desired results. However, a new study has suggested that vigorous exercise can reduce your risk of cancer and heart disease, and there’s impressive evidence to boot.
So, who conducted this study, and is it really viable? This test was undertaken by physical therapy professors at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and aimed to look at the link between women between 50 and 75 years old undertaking a stress test, their fitness level, and their risk of cancer and heart disease. For the test itself, the researchers studied two groups of women. One group featured women who struggled to exercise at a higher level, and the other group featured women who were capable of exercising at a higher level. As the first group exercised under the level that is considered to be “vigorous,” they undertook a stress echocardiogram. The second group also undertook this stress test, but while they exercised in a “vigorous” manner.
At the end of the study, the researchers looked at their findings to see if there was a link between these variables. In the end, they found that women who could not exercise about the threshold were almost four times more likely to pass away from cardiovascular disease than those who were able to undertake vigorous exercise. Alongside this, they also noted that the first group was more likely to pass away from cancer than those who were exercising at a high level. However, it’s important to note that, while this test focused on their exercise ability and their health risks, the study did not take into consideration the way that the women trained for this test or what specific physical activities they have done over the course of their lives. This study also only focused on women and did not test any men.
What it means
Of course, while we can’t take this study as the definitive truth, there’s no doubt about the fact that it got researchers and experts talking. That’s because it seems as though those who embark on more vigorous exercise reduce their chances of getting cancer or heart disease. This may call into question the whole idea of “exercise” as a whole, as many people are led to believe that any form of exercise is good for you. With this in mind, it’s fair to say that more testing and detailed studies need to look into this further.
While the results seem to show a link between vigorous exercise and improved health, there’s no doubt about the fact that anything you can do to get your body moving is beneficial.
