‘Fad’ Diets That Actually Do Work

We’re often warned of the dangers of ‘fad diets’ by nutritionists and health experts. After all, they’re called fad diets for a reason, and that’s usually because they don’t last. However, there are some diets which were labeled as fad diets when they first came out, that have gone on to be proven to actually work. Studies have shown that the following diets, which were thought to be fads, could actually help with weight loss.

The Atkins Diet

Did you know that the Atkins is one of the most famous low-carb diets in the world? Created back in the early 1970s by Robert Atkins, a cardiologist, this diet involves cutting down on carbs without feeling hungry all day. There are four stages to the diet, with the first two weeks involving barely any carbs at all. You’ll then introduce carbs back into your life to work out what your own ‘critical carb levels’ are that will ensure you’re not hungry, but are still keeping carbohydrates to a minimum. Various studies have shown that The Atkins Diet is actually quite effective for weight loss, particularly as it can be quite easy to follow after the first two-week induction phase.

Vegan Diet

Going vegan has boomed in popularity recently, with many wondering whether it was just a fad. However, studies have gone on to show that being vegan can come with plenty of health benefits, as long as it is done right. Various studies have been undertaken into how good going vegan really is for you, with surprising results. They found that a vegan diet aided in weight loss and could also help reduce the risk of heart disease. Not only can you lose weight and feel healthier with a vegan diet, but it is also deemed as a more ethical way of eating. It seems like a win-win for many!

Ketogenic Diet

Like the Atkins diet, the Ketogenic diet focuses on cutting down on carbs. However, unlike the Atkins, people following this diet don’t gradually reintroduce those carbs. Instead, they’re encouraged to keep their total carbs per day to under 50g (sometimes even under 30g), to ensure your body goes into ketosis. It’s believed that when a body is in ketosis it has run out of carbs to get energy from, so burns ketones instead. While it has been proven to be effective in weight loss, many people can find that the symptoms of ketosis are too hard to bear with for long periods of time.

Paleo Diet

The Paleolithic diet (also known as the Paleo diet) is based on the diet that humans are thought to have eaten thousands of years ago. Lots of foods are restricted, which is what gave this diet the label of ‘fad,’ but it has actually been proven to work when it comes to weight loss. Paleo focuses on plant-based and animal foods, cutting out as much processed stuff as possible.

These diets may have been labeled as ‘fads’ when they first came out, but studies have shown that they might actually work for you.
