Improving our health is hard when we don’t have the time to devote ourselves to regular exercise. Luckily, there are things we can incorporate into our everyday routines to help with this, such as sitting on an exercise ball. However, do we really need to sit on an exercise ball to improve our health?

There are supposedly tons of health benefits to sitting on an exercise ball

Swapping a desk chair for an exercise ball wouldn’t be worthwhile unless it offered health benefits. Fortunately, there’s supposedly a wealth of these, including better balance and posture. Sitting on an exercise ball is also believed to increase energy expenditure because of how frequently the ball moves. Furthermore, studies claim that it can help to strengthen lower body muscles and increase endurance. With all that, it would seem like sitting on an exercise ball is a great way to improve health. So, what’s the catch?

Sitting on an exercise ball might not be all it’s cracked up to be

Different studies have different findings, with some stating there’s little indication that sitting on an exercise ball offers all these benefits. Moreover, there can apparently be some big issues when sitting on one of these. This includes a greater risk of injury, as there’s the potential to lose balance and fall. Other problems reportedly include back pain and insignificant calorie burn. It would seem that using an exercise ball as a chair might not do enough to counteract the health issues of sitting down for too long.

You can counteract the issues of sitting on an exercise ball in several ways

Given that some studies report positive findings from sitting on an exercise ball, it’s possible it could still be good for our health. However, if you use one, you’ll want to counteract any potential back pain or injury issues. You can achieve this by customizing your workstation so there’s nothing around you that could cause harm. For instance, sit in front of a wall and put some cushioning under the ball. Making sure the ball is the right size can also help. You’ll know you’ve got it right when your thighs slope downward slightly without your wrists balancing on the desk.

There are alternatives to an exercise ball that could also improve our health

Given the conflicting evidence about whether we need to sit on an exercise ball to improve our health, it might be best to seek an alternative. How about a standing desk? This counteracts the issue of sitting for prolonged periods of time by keeping you on your feet. A treadmill desk is also a possibility. It will definitely keep you active, though it will work better for some people than others, or you could just buy a chair that offers excellent lumbar support while also remembering to stretch your legs regularly throughout the day.

It seems like we don’t need to sit on an exercise ball to improve our health. However, it still might be worth giving it a try. If it ends up working for you, then great.
