With so many diets on the market, it can be tough to find one that’s right for you. However, there is one that seems to come up time and time again: the paleo diet. So what is this diet, and does it really work?
What is the paleo diet?
This diet had an easy rule to follow: if it wasn’t in a cave person’s diet, then it won’t be in yours. Following a paleo lifestyle means that we only eat thing that we would have once been able to hunt and forage from the land. There is no counting calories or having to weigh out your portions; following the paleo diet is all about eating the right food for the meal plan.
What can you eat on the diet?
Unfortunately, all those candy bars and refined sugars are out of the question, but then there aren’t many diets that encourage us to eat them. However, our plates are instead filled with all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as many leafy greens, a selection of meats, and plenty of fish. The best bit? The paleo diet is designed so that we can eat until we are full rather than stopping at a certain nutrient level.
How the paleo diet works
The idea behind the paleo diet is that as time progressed and we learned how to farm foods, we began to eat more and more carbohydrates. However, many believe that our bodies never fully adjusted and that we are now eating more energy than we use – and having to store it as a result. Cutting back on any refined sugars and junk food means that our bodies are forced to use the fats we have in reserve and ultimately lose weight.
The benefits of the paleo diet
Many of us are more likely to eat a cleaner diet on a paleo regime as we avoid preservatives, chemicals, and additives. Plus, it’s said that more red meat is likely to increase our iron intake – something that many of us are lacking – as well as lose weight, and enjoy several anti-inflammatory benefits that come from eating a lot more plant-based meals.
Does the paleo diet work?
As with any diet plan, many people have spoken about the benefits of switching up their lifestyles. It’s thought that that forcing our bodies to use up the fats it has in reserve while adapting to use energy from our new intake is how many people lose weight. However, it’s not recommended for those who feel they can’t give up their bread or pasta. To top it off, many people state how they have increased energy levels as they rid themselves of the low-energy yet high-calorie junk food they are used to consuming.
Although it can seem like a major change, the paleo diet might be perfect for someone looking to shake up their lifestyle without having to put too much work into the change thanks to the lack of counting calories or portioning out their meals.
